Do I need to format hard drive before I can save music files into it? I couldn’t copy our music wav file from my computer. I’m using a Western Digital external hard drive in a Windows XP computer. Do you have any recommendations on how I can resolve this problem? Thanks
If you are going to use only Windows computers with your drive, I would certainly format it using the NTFS file system. You will be able to read this drive on a Mac, but you will not be able to write to it with one. If you want a drive to work with both, use FAT32. The several limitations there, but the most significant is that the max file size of all files have to be under 4 GB. This is not a good choice if you occasionally work with large video files, database files, or anything else that may get up to that size. The Mac has its own file system, but that will not be compatible with windows at all without some serious effort and some trial and error with some additional software.
